When Calls the Heart star Mamie Laverock did not attempt suicide, according to her mother, Nicole Rockmann, who denied claims that her daughter’s recent accident was an effort to take her own life.

Rockmann confirmed to The Los Angeles Times on May 30, 2024, that Laverock’s five-story fall from a walkway at St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver, Canada — where she was allegedly being escorted from one unit to another — was not “intended” or a suicide attempt. Rockmann also told the newspaper that Laverock’s family planned to take legal action against the hospital in a “negligence-type case.” “This is an absolute miracle and there will be accountability,” Rockmann said of Laverock’s survival. She continued, “We have a case. All we care about is that Mamie can make a recovery and that she’s alive and that she’s fighting and that she’s strong. It’s unbelievable that she’s with us.”

Ann Gibbon, a spokesperson for Providence Health Care, which operates St. Paul’s Hospital, confirmed that an “incident happened” at the hospital but couldn’t comment due to protocol around patient privacy. “In cases related to patient safety, an internal critical incident review is conducted to determine exactly what happened and to make recommendations for improved patient safety,” Gibbon said. “Our hearts go out to the patient, family, and all affected by this event, and we offer our best wishes for a full recovery.”

According to Laverock’s family’s GoFundMe page, which was set up by Rockmann and her husband, Rob Compton, Laverock was being ecorted out of a secure unit at the hospital and was “taken up to a balcony walkway from which she fell five stories.” Rockmann confirmed to the Los Angeles Times that Laverock is “doing well” after undergoing several multi-hour surgeries and getting off a ventilator. She also confirmed that Laverock has since been transferred to a different trauma center than St. Paul’s Hospital and was no longer being treated at the hospital where her accident occurred.

“Mamie just opened her eyes,” Rockmann said. “Let’s just hope this is the turnaround and she’s going to get through this now. I couldn’t be happier that people reached out and cared. The story will be told.” Though she didn’t disclose the injuries Laverock had sustained, Rockmann told the newspaper that her daughter’s body was “shattered” and she was in “tremendous pain.”

She also told The Los Angeles Times that her daughter is “aware” enough to squeeze her mother’s hand but also requires sedation to remain still while recovering from her surgeries.

News broke of Laverock’s accident in late May 2024 when her family set up a GoFundMe page to help pay for her medical expenses. According to the page, Laverock traveled to Winnipeg with her mother for a separate medical emergency on Saturday, May 11. She suffered her fall on May 26 when she was being escorted from one unit of the hospital to the other.

“On Saturday May 11th , Nicole traveled to Winnipeg to help Mamie ,who was having a medical emergency. Nicole was able to get there in time to save her life. Then got her to a hospital in Winnipeg . Mamie has since been transferred to Hospital here in Vancouver. Her recovery is unclear at this time but she is alive and is showing signs of improvement,” the GoFundMe page read. “We are trying to go every day to support her . Any contributions would help us be by her side . But this could be upwards of a month or more. We will share all the updates we can. Thank you for all your well wishes.”

An update on May 26 read, “We are deeply saddened to report that on May 26th, Mamie, who has been in intensive treatment for the past two weeks, was escorted out of a secure unit of the hospital and taken up to a balcony walkway from which she fell five stories. She sustained life threatening injuries, has undergone multiple extensive surgeries, and is currently on life support. We are all devastated, in shock, at this intensely difficult time. With love and deep gratitude.”

Laverock’s family gave another update later that week in which they confirmed that Laverock had woken up and survived her injuries. “I wanted to speak yesterday on the speculations. Focusing now on Mamie’s surgery today. Her body has been shattered. She has undergone two 11 hour surgeries with two doctors working on her, a three hour surgery and another surgery today,” the GoFundMe page read. “We have nothing but gratitude for the doctors and nurses who have been exemplary in her care since May 26.”
