There are quite a few exciting horror games on the horizon, ranging from major remakes like Silent Hill 2, to long-awaited games like Slitterhead, to promising indie titles like Paper Ghost Stories: Third Eye Open. Alongside those anticipated releases are No More Room in Hell 2 and State of Decay 3, with the former slated for an early access release in Halloween 2024, and the latter having no concrete release window just yet.
No More Room in Hell 2 and State of Decay 3 are both zombie games with a strong emphasis on action gameplay with some survival mechanics thrown in for good measure, and that's just scratching the surface of what these two horror games have in common. Essentially, these zombie games are two sides of the same coin, but there's one big difference that separates them in the end.

No More Room in Hell 2 and State of Decay 3 Are Both Long-Awaited Sequels
Originally released as a Half-Life 2 mod in 2011, the first No More Room in Hell earned a sizable cult following upon its initial release, eventually warranting a standalone release of the game in 2013. A co-op first-person zombie survival shooter, No More Room in Hell has enjoyed some strong critical reviews and has managed to maintain a loyal fan-base, many of whom are now champing at the bit for the long-awaited sequel.
Originally announced in October 2016, fans have been waiting a long time for No More Room in Hell 2. Though it was originally slated to come out in October 2022, No More Room in Hell 2's early access release was delayed, with the studio announcing that it had developed a partnership with another studio that would grant the game more funding, and the team more resources. It was recently revealed that No More Room in Hell 2's partner studio is Torn Banner, the same developer behind the Chivalry series. Currently, No More Room in Hell 2 is scheduled for an early access launch in October of this year.
State of Decay 3 has had a similar development story. Back in 2013, the first State of Decay became an Xbox Live Arcade smash-hit. Five years later, State of Decay 2 launched, and though it didn't quite meet expectations, fans were still hopeful about the series' future. Just a month after State of Decay 2's launch, developer Undead Labs was acquired by Microsoft, and in 2020 a third installment in the zombie action survival series was announced.
However, a few years after its announcement, reports started surfacing that suggested State of Decay 3's development was in trouble. While many fans remained hopeful that State of Decay 3 would still see the light of day eventually, Undead Labs' radio silence didn't bode well. But in a rather surprising turn of events State of Decay 3 reared its head once more during June's Xbox Showcase. After years of waiting, it finally seems as though fans could have their hands on the sequel sooner rather than later.
Expectations Differ Between No More Room in Hell 2 and State of Decay 3
While State of Decay 3 and No More Room in Hell 2 are both long-awaited zombie action survival sequels, there's one key way in which both projects differ, and that's the expectations that are currently being placed on each one. Even with Torn Banner Studios now developing the game in partnership with its original team, No More Room in Hell 2 is still very much an indie game, and thus has more limited resources. State of Decay 3, on the other hand, is now being developed by a first-party Xbox studio, and presumably has access to all of the budgetary benefits that come with that, meaning that fans have cause to expect a lot more from the series' third entry.

Torn Banner's No More Room in Hell 2 is a co-op shooter that supports up to eight players. Starting alone and having to find their companions, players are dropped in expansive maps as they try to survive the zombie hordes with limited ammo.
