Lauren Boebert puts Marjorie Taylor Greene on blast after viral hearing (2024)

Representative Lauren Boebert, a Colorado Republican, put Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Georgia Republican, on blast on Friday after a committee hearing that ensued in a verbal brawl between Greene and Representative Jasmine Crockett, a Texas Democrat, went viral on social media.

At a House Oversight committee hearing on Thursday night, Greene told Crockett, "I think your fake eyelashes are messing up what you're reading." Greene's comment received instant backlash with ranking member Jamie Raskin, a Maryland Democrat, telling the congresswoman, "That's beneath even you Ms. Greene."

New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who is the committee's number 2 Democrat, asked to strike Greene's words from the record, calling her actions "absolutely unacceptable."

When chairman James Comer, a Kentucky Republican, refused to enforce the committee's rules on decorum, Crockett took a jab at Greene, asking Comer, "If someone on this committee then starts talking about somebody's bleach-blonde, bad-built butch body, that would not be engaging in personalities, correct?"

Greene's quarrel with Crockett made headlines and a video of the altercation went viral on social media. A senior digital editor for liberal news site MeidasTouch who goes by Acyn posted the clip on X, formerly Twitter, on Thursday night and it has already received 3.4 million views.

Boebert was the only Republican to side with the Democrats in an attempt to silence Greene for the rest of the hearing, showing that the rift between the two GOP congresswoman has yet to be repaired.

"It was embarrassing what was going on," the Colorado congresswoman told reporters on Friday. "I couldn't bring myself to stand in defense of that. I wouldn't do it for the other side."

Newsweek reached out to the offices of Boebert and Greene via email and Crockett's office via telephone for comment.

During the committee hearing on Thursday night, Boebert apologized to the public.

"I just wanna apologize to the American people. I don't think this is the best use of our time when we are squabbling," she said. "It's one thing to have fun and laugh as members of Congress and try to find humor or some sort of lightheartedness in what we are doing. But when things get as heated as they have, it's unfortunately an embarrassment on our body as a whole."

The committee met on Thursday night to decide whether to recommend that U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland should be held in contempt of Congress for refusing to hand over the audio recordings of President Joe Biden's interview with the Department of Justice's (DOJ) Special Counsel Robert Hur over his mishandling of classified documents. Hur ultimately decided not to criminally charge the president and the transcript of the interview has been made public.

Biden used executive privilege to stop the release of the audio recordings at Garland's request, however, the Oversight Committee and the House Judiciary Committee still voted to recommend holding Garland in contempt of Congress. The measure will now be brought to the full House for a vote and if it passes, it is still up to Biden's DOJ to determine whether the charges are fitting.

In June 2023, Greene reportedly called Boebert "a little b****" during a heated exchange on the House floor, claiming that she'd copied articles of impeachment Greene was preparing against Biden, The Daily Beast reported at the time. Biden, meanwhile, has never admitted to any high crimes or misdemeanors that would warrant an impeachment.

It was confirmed a few weeks later that Greene had been removed from the far-right Freedom Caucus.

"It's not one simple attack. It's not what happened on the floor a few weeks ago with Lauren Boebert. It is a series of really poorly thought-out attacks on other members," then-Representative Ken Buck, a Colorado Republican, said on NBC News' Meet the Press NOW in July 2023.
