If you know how to make a secret door in Minecraft, you can keep your most prized treasures hidden from other players. The best way to make a hidden door is to create a locking mechanism using Redstone.
These instructions apply to Minecraft on all platforms.
Required Materials to Make a Secret Door
Here's what you'll need to make your secret door:
- 7 Sticky Pistons
- A Redstone Torch
- A Redstone Repeater
- A Redstone Block
- Redstone Dust
Where to Place Your Secret Door in Minecraft
Before you begin, you should consider where you want your secret door. Other players can still find your hidden passage by digging, so you'll want to build somewhere inconspicuous, preferably in an isolated or underground location. It's best to carve out a room in a cliff face and seal it with a secret door that blends in with the surrounding blocks.
How to Build a Hidden Door in Minecraft
Follow these steps to create a secret door that can only be activated with a Redstone Torch.
Create an entranceway (one block wide and two tall). Make sure you have plenty of space behind it to build a Redstone mechanism and a room to hide your goods. Place some torches on the walls for light if you need it.
Enter your secret room and turn around to face the exit. On one side of the exit, leave an empty space, then put down 2 Sticky Pistons side-by-side perpendicular to the door wall.
Place 2 more Sticky Pistons atop the others to form a 4X4 structure. Make sure the front of the pistons are all facing the same way, perpendicular to the door.
Turn and face away from the door and stack 2 Sticky Pistons next to the others. You should still have an empty space beside the entrance, and the faces of the final pistons should face in the direction of the doorway.
Fill the space between the pistons with 2 blocks matching the surrounding landscape.
Place blocks on top of the two piston towers facing the door, then place another block beside them so that it hangs over the entryway.
Place a Redstone Repeater in the center-top block and set it to 2 ticks.
Make sure the Repeater faces the direction shown in the picture below, or else it won't work.
Place Redstone Dust next to the Repeater on the far side of the door. Make a trail that leads down to the piston beside it, then continue the trail behind the top pistons and down to the floor.
Make sure the Redstone Dust trail connects to the bottom Piston close to the wall; the trail shouldn't touch the Piston closer to the door.
Place Redstone Dust on the ground three spaces away from the front of the doorway. It shouldn't be touching the Pistons, and there should be a single empty space between it and the Redstone trail you created on the other side.
Exit the door and go outside. Place a Redstone Torch against the outside wall of your room about 4 blocks away from the door, on the opposite side the Pistons are on.
Place a block directly above the Redstone Torch so that it attaches to the outside wall, then put some blocks around it to make it look like a natural extension of the wall (but make sure you still have access to the torch).
Go back into the room and stand in front of the Redstone Torch on the opposite side of the wall, then break the blocks in front of it so that you can see the torch.
Do not destroy the block directly above your Redstone Torch. This block is essential to making your secret door work.
Place a block directly in front of the Redstone Torch, then put Redstone Dust on top of it. The Redstone Dust should be activated and start glowing.
Step back and place a Sticky Piston directly in front of the block with the activated Redstone Dust. The piston should automatically activate and push you back.
Place a Redstone block next to the piston you just laid down so that the front touches the Redstone block.
Place Redstone Dust on the floor next to the space between the piston base and the Redstone block.
Make a trail from the Redstone Dust you just laid down to the Redstone Dust three spaces away from the front of the doorway. This trail shouldn't touch the door pistons; there should still be a single empty space between this trail and the Redstone Dust you laid down on the other side of your door.
Make a trail of Redstone Dust that connects the other side of the Redstone Repeater to the starting point of the second trail you laid down. To do this, you'll need to build a stairway.
Once the Redstone Dust circuit is complete, it should look like the picture below. You should have a continuous trail connected by the Redstone Repeater. The trail shouldn't touch the Redstone block because you don't want it to activate yet.
To close the door, go outside and destroy the Redstone Torch (make sure you don't break the block directly above it).
Destroying the Redstone Torch deactivates the piston on the other side, which pulls the Redstone block back so that it connects to your Redstone Dust circuit. The Redstone Dust will activate, triggering the door Pistons.
To open the door, put the Redstone Torch back where it was again.
To close the door behind you, go inside your room to the opposite side of the Redstone Torch. Then, break the Redstone Dust that connects the torch and the Sticky Piston. The Piston will deactivate, and the door will lock.
To unlock the door from the inside, replace the Redstone Dust connecting the torch to the Sticky Piston. The Piston will activate, pushing the Redstone block away and breaking the circuit.
When you go back outside, break the Redstone Torch to close the door. Place a Redstone Torch in this spot whenever you want to access your secret room. Remember to close the door behind you.
Make a map with location markers to help you remember where to find your secret doors.
